Aerial Yoga

A few weeks ago, I joined some friends in celebrating a birthday with an aerial yoga class. I've only done a handful of regular yoga classes in a studio and nothing in the realm of aerial so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've seen the youtube videos of the aerial dancers of course, twisting and turning their bodies around brightly colored scarves, almost seeming to float. I knew even before I set foot in the studio, I would not be that graceful. Nor would I float.
I am a consistent middle distance runner and strength train nearly every day, however, some of moves in the class required flipping upside down and others actually climbing up the hammocks. I was definitely grunting and sweating throughout.

My friends were able to master most of the moves and we were all laughing by the end of the class. My absolute favorite move was shavasana. We made the hammocks into little cocoons, the teacher dimmed the lights and rubbed lavender oil on our temples. And we kind of just got to swing there, in our own little hammock. Soooo relaxing. I could have stayed there for awhile..
Aerial yoga was fun and I would totally do it again. I'm also proud of myself for continuing to push outside of my comfort zone, especially if it gets me up in the air.
XOXO
